🔥Quote of the Week:

"Fall seven times, stand up eight."– Japanese Proverb (Nana korobi ya oki)

🤔Reflection:

This ancient Japanese proverb captures one of the most powerful truths about human potential: resilience is not about never falling. It is about always rising. The number seven represents countless setbacks, while eight symbolizes the unbreakable spirit that chooses to stand again.

In Japanese culture, this idea is embodied in the Daruma doll, a rounded, weighted figure that rights itself no matter how many times it is knocked over. Life will knock you down. Careers stall. Relationships end. Dreams get delayed. Life happens. Too all of us.

A Japanese Daruma Doll

Samuel L. Jackson learned this first-hand. More about that in a bit. Keep reading.

Early-on in my life, I had my sights set on a career in federal law enforcement. I applied to many federal law enforcement job announcements. The declination letters came back in droves. I called them “F-you! you suck! We hate you!” letters. I jokingly told my wife I was going to wallpaper the basement with all of them. I didn’t let those declination letters grind me down. I used them to fuel my mental fire. It didn’t happen overnight. But, I eventually landed my dream job and went on to enjoy a full federal law enforcement career that I absolutely loved. Looking back, I’m damn glad I didn’t quit.

🔥The difference between those who stay stuck and those who break through is that eighth rise.💪

🏆Why This Can Be Your Superpower

Perseverance is your quiet superpower that turns ordinary effort into your extraordinary outcomes.

Talent gets attention. Intelligence solves problems. But perseverance is what carries you across the invisible finish lines. The ones that appear only after repeated failure. The ones that stop the majority.

Perseverance Is What Carries You Across The Invisible Finish Lines

It compounds. Each time you stand up, you build momentum, wisdom, and proof to yourself that quitting is optional. Each little peice adds to the building blocks that create your unstoppable foundation.

🔬The Science Behind It

Research backs up what this Japanese proverb teaches us: perseverance is a learnable skill that drives real success.

Psychologist Angela Duckworth's studies show that grit, passion, and sustained perseverance for long-term goals predicts achievement better than talent or IQ alone. In challenging environments like West Point or national spelling bees, grittier individuals outperform others, even when they are less naturally gifted.

Neuroscience adds the proof. Persistent effort strengthens brain pathways for resilience and even promotes neuroplasticity, rewiring your mind for better focus and recovery from setbacks.

The evidence is clear: getting up that eighth time isn't just willpower. It's science.

🧬Stories That Bring It to Life

Samuel L. Jackson spent years grinding in small roles, battling addiction, and facing rejection after rejection. He was struggling in his early 40s, far from stardom. Then, at age 46, he landed the iconic role of Jules Winnfield in Pulp Fiction, a performance that earned him global fame, an Oscar nomination, and launched him into one of Hollywood's most prolific careers.

Stan Lee & His Fantastic Creations

Stan Lee, the legendary creator of Spider-Man, the X-Men, and countless Marvel heroes, faced decades of doubt. Comics were seen as lowbrow entertainment, and he nearly quit the industry multiple times in his 30s and 40s. At age 43, he finally created the Fantastic Four. This sparked the Marvel revolution that redefined pop culture and made him an icon later in life.

Morgan Freeman didn't land his first major film role until he was 50. Before that, he endured years of theater work, odd jobs, and obscurity. His breakthrough in Driving Miss Daisy led to a legendary career filled with absolutely unforgettable performances.

These trajectories of life remind us: breakthroughs often come right after the moments when quitting feels most reasonable.

🎇A Challenge to Spark Change

This week, pick one goal you've been avoiding.

Commit to one "stand up" action. It doesn’t matter how small it is. Do this every day for the next seven days.

Track it simply: note the day and the action. When doubt hits, remind yourself: "Fall seven times, stand up eight." Never forget this. It’s a life-changing lesson. Even if you are 46 (or, 86).
