Intro

Sara Blakely built Spanx by reframing failure as “not trying” instead of “not succeeding.” Her Resilience Formula, daily rejection exposure, laser-focus visualization, and self-taught expertise, transformed one painful “No” into a billion-dollar brand. You can apply the same steps beginning today.

Today’s powerful quote is the entire operating system behind Spanx, a company that went from $5,000 in savings and a pair of cut-up pantyhose to a billion-dollar empire.

"What did you fail at today?" 💡 At the Blakely dinner table, the biggest failure won the night. This bold tradition taught Sara Blakely that failure isn't the outcome, it's the lack of trying. 🚀 #EntrepreneurMindset #SaraBlakely #SuccessTips

Every night at the Blakely family dinner table, Sara’s father would ask each child the same question: “What did you fail at today?” The best answer wasn’t zero failures, it was the biggest, boldest failure. That single habit rewired her entire relationship with rejection. Fresh out of college, Sara spent seven years selling fax machines door-to-door, hearing “No” hundreds of times a week. Instead of quitting, she studied those rejections like a scientist. When the idea for footless pantyhose hit her on a flight in 1998, she used her entire life savings, taught herself patent law, manufactured the first prototypes in her apartment, and famously pitched a Neiman Marcus buyer from a bathroom stall. Today Spanx is a household name. Sara is a self-made billionaire who still credits every early “No” as the rocket fuel that got her there. And, she and her husband, serial entrepreneur Jesse Itzler, continue to champion this mindset as a true power couple.

In this week’s edition of Wise Words Weekly, we’re diving deep into Sara Blakely’s failure mindset. The same Spanx founder lessons on rejection that turned constant “No’s” into one of the most successful from idea to empire success stories of our time.

Whether you’re an entrepreneur, side-hustler, or simply someone tired of playing it safe, this Sara Blakely resilience formula for success will show you exactly how to embrace failure like Sara Blakely and make it your greatest advantage in 2026.

Quote of the Week🔥

My failure is the best thing that ever happened to me.

Reflection 🤔

There’s something quietly revolutionary about deciding that failure isn’t the opposite of success. It’s the raw material. When you adopt a growth mindset, every setback stops being a verdict on your worth and becomes data for your next move. That shift doesn’t happen overnight, but once it does, you start seeing opportunities where others only see closed doors, or worse yet, nothing at all.

Redefining failure as raw material for success. When you shift your mindset, every setback becomes data.

I’ve watched this transformation in my own life more times than I can count, and I know you have stories like that too. Moments when a painful “No” eventually revealed a much better “Yes.” That’s the power we’re unpacking today.

Last week, I told you about my good fortune of being fired as a dispatcher and immediately hired as a detention officer in the county jail as a result of that termination. This week we fast-forward three years to when I chose to leave the Sheriff’s Office (the first time).

Shayne and I have been best friends for decades. In 1988, I trained him in the jail. In 1990, he and I were both full-time detention officers in the jail and part-time patrol deputies out on the street. A full-time patrol position became available and he and I both put in for it. Shayne was selected and did an absolutely fantastic job in that role. Through his seventeen years there, he move up the ranks and eventually made patrol lieutenant. Years later, I would come back and work under him as a part-time deputy.

But, back then in 1990, I had met a beautiful girl on the other side of the state and decided a life with her was my most important thing. So, I packed up stakes and moved to where she was. That turned out to be a great call on my part. Today, she is still my beautiful bride and we created an entire family of awesome children and grand-children. I wouldn’t change a thing. And, eventually, I would go on to use that jail experience to help me get into my beloved federal law enforcement caereer that I would retire from. Much the same as Sara Blakely, I didn’t let a “No” (that failure to secure a full-time patrol deputy position) stop me from taking action and attaining my goals.

Why This Can Be Your Superpower 🦸‍♂

Your ability to embrace failure like Sara Blakely is your ultimate unfair advantage in 2026. While others freeze at the first sign of rejection, you’ll have a proven Sara Blakely resilience formula for success that turns “No” into momentum.

🚀 Master the Sara Blakely resilience formula to turn rejection into momentum. In 2026, your ability to embrace failure is your ultimate unfair advantage. 📈

This is especially powerful for building an entrepreneur resilience mindset in 2026. It’s the difference between protecting your ego and protecting your future empire.

If you struggle with this type of thing, replacing your current content such as Facebook, TikTok, video games, and movies with content that encompasses a growth mindset can be a total game-changer.

(By the way, if you aren’t sure where your growth mindset currently sits, before and after self-assessments are included in the Billionaire Growth Mindset Blueprint. There will be a link at the bottom of this newsletter. Keep reading.)

"I just made a decision one day that I was not going to do things in my life because of fear."

The Science Behind It 🔬

Recent research on entrepreneurial resilience confirms exactly what Sara experienced. A 2026 study published in the Journal of Small Business Management found that entrepreneurs who develop high entrepreneurial self-efficacy (the belief that they can handle challenges) are significantly better at reframing failure as a learning opportunity.

Recent 2026 research highlights how entrepreneurial self-efficacy helps teams turn setbacks into success. 🚀

This cognitive reappraisal reduces the psychological weight of setbacks and directly boosts resilience, persistence, and adaptive problem-solving, even in fast-changing digital environments.

In short: the more you practice embracing failure, the more your brain rewires itself for growth.

Stories That Bring It to Life 🧬

Jamie Reilly launched Reizia Digital, a small digital marketing agency, after her corporate job disappeared overnight in 2023. Her first three major client pitches were all “No.” Instead of retreating, she treated each rejection as free consulting. She asked for specific feedback, iterated her deck, and within nine months landed a six-figure contract that now funds her team of four.

Chobani founder Hamdi Ulukaya viewed his early manufacturing failures as a supply chain masterclass. 🥛🚀

Halfway across the country, Hamdi Ulukaya (founder of Chobani) faced repeated manufacturing failures and distributor rejections when he first tried to bring Greek yogurt to America. He nearly lost everything until he decided the “failures” were simply the price of learning the supply chain. Today Chobani is a billion-dollar brand, and Ulukaya still says his early rejections taught him more than any business school ever could.

Both of these stories prove the same truth: the Spanx founder lessons on rejection work at every scale.

How To Start Today 🏃‍➡️

  1. Adopt the Dinner Table Question: Every evening, ask yourself (or your family): “What did I fail at today?” Celebrate the attempt, not the outcome.

  2. Build Daily Rejection Exposure: Make one small ask every day that has a high chance of “No.” Sales call, partnership pitch, content idea. Normalize hearing it.

  3. Visualize the Win + Study the Gap: Spend five minutes picturing the empire, then immediately list the next tiny actionable step. Sara didn’t just dream; she patented, prototyped, and pitched.

  4. Document Your Pivot Moments: Keep a simple “Rejection Journal.” Next to every “No,” write what you learned and the next experiment it inspired.

Do this consistently and you’ll be living the how to embrace failure like Sara Blakely playbook before the month is out.

Don’t be embarassed by your failures. Learn from them and start again.
