Quote of the Week🔥
“Resentment is like drinking poison and then hoping it kills your enemies.”
- Nelson Mandela
Reflection 🤔
Nelson Mandela’s time on Robben Island wasn’t just survival, it was strategic preparation. He used those years to study, reflect, and deliberately choose a path of cognitive reframing over retaliation. This growth mindset approach transformed potential bitterness into visionary leadership that changed South Africa and inspired the world.

As you read this, consider where resentment might still be quietly draining your bandwidth. Like Mandela, we have the power to reclaim that energy for what truly matters: our goals, our relationships, and our next level of impact.
When I first started my career at the Sheriff’s Office, I was working full-time as a Detention Officer in the jail. The year was 1988. A few months into the job, a guy I had went to high school with got hired. Our supervisor had me train him. Eventually, he and I both became part-time road patrol deputies. We would work our full-time job in the jail and then work street shifts in our spare time.
A couple of years later, a full-time opening for patrol became available. He and I both applied and he was chosen for the job. In all honesty, he was the best man for the job, by far. Nonetheless, I was still devestated that I wasn’t selected. I wasn’t bitter though. It was a good lesson for me to, “become better.”
Fast forward a decade and he had worked his way up through the ranks to the position of lieutenant. I had moved away for a few years. When I came back, I became a part-time deputy again. He and I became best friends. That was over 35 years ago. Today, he and I are still best friends. I talked to him on the phone this morning and he is coming over to hang out in my shop this evening.
"As I walked out the door, toward the gate that would lead to my freedom, I knew If I didn’t leave my bitterness and hatred behind, I would still be in prison."
Why This Can Be Your Superpower 🦸♂
Forgiveness isn’t passive, it’s proactive leadership. By dropping the emotional weight of past grievances, you free up massive mental resources for creativity, problem-solving, and opportunity spotting. This creates what Mandela modeled: an internal locus of control that no external circumstance can touch.

💡 Forgiveness isn't passive, it's a proactive leadership superpower that frees mental energy and builds ultimate resilience.
In business and life, this superpower builds trust, attracts better partnerships, and models resilience for your team. It turns potential victims into victors who design their future rather than replay old wounds. Embracing this growth mindset shifts you from reactive survival to intentional thriving.

"The weak can never forgive. Forgiveness is the attribute of the strong."
The Science Behind It 🔬
Research consistently shows that forgiveness reduces chronic stress, lowers cortisol levels, decreases symptoms of anxiety and depression, and improves cardiovascular health and sleep quality. A landmark meta-analysis found forgiveness interventions significantly boost mental health outcomes, with participants reporting higher self-esteem, hope, and life satisfaction.

🧠 Forgiveness isn't just moral, it's biological. Research shows letting go of resentment lowers cortisol and reduces chronic stress.
Physiologically, holding resentment keeps the body in a prolonged fight-or-flight state, taxing the immune system. Choosing forgiveness activates parasympathetic recovery, enhancing emotional regulation and cognitive clarity, key for high-performance leadership and personal growth.
"Those who cannot forgive others break the bridge over which they themselves must pass."
Stories That Bring It to Life 🧬
Dena Patton’s Business Rebirth: After leading a successful PR and marketing agency in New York, Dena suffered a minor stroke that forced her to confront her identity tied entirely to her work. Instead of resentment toward the setback or herself, she chose deep self-forgiveness and reflection during recovery. She sold her original company, transformed her habits and mindset, and launched a new venture focused on “Love as a Business Strategy.” Her forgiveness-centered leadership now helps executives build authentic cultures, proving that releasing the old self creates space for scaled impact.

🥨 From a small farmers market stand to a global brand, Anne Beiler built the Auntie Anne’s Pretzel Empire on faith and resilience. ✨
Anne Beiler’s Auntie Anne’s Pretzel Empire: After profound personal grief and business struggles, Anne chose a path of forgiveness toward circumstances and herself. With her husband, she started small at a farmers market with a mission rooted in healing and service. By embracing forgiveness as part of her faith-driven growth mindset, she turned pain into purpose. Auntie Anne’s grew into a global brand with thousands of locations, showing how personal release fuels entrepreneurial resilience and community contribution.
Peter DeSoto’s Path from Violence to Purpose: Shot during a gang-related incident, Peter faced immense trauma. Rather than letting hatred define him, he pursued forgiveness as a deliberate practice. This choice freed him to build businesses and speak on “The Business of Forgiveness,” helping others turn adversity into redemptive leadership and community impact.
These stories illustrate how everyday leaders and entrepreneurs harness Mandela’s principle for real-world breakthroughs.

“We cannot change the past. But, we can change our attitude towards it.”
How To Start Today 🏃➡️
Acknowledge Without Attachment: Name the resentment factually, then consciously decide it no longer owns you.
Reframe with a Growth Mindset: Ask, “What strength or lesson did this adversity build in me?” Write it down.
Practice Tactical Release: Use a simple ritual: journal the grievance, then write a release statement and physically discard the paper.
Take One Forward Action: Channel the freed energy into a specific goal, relationship repair, or skill-building step this week.
Repeat consistently. Like Mandela on Robben Island, small daily choices compound into legendary freedom.
“It is right for him who asks forgiveness for his offenses to grant it to others. ”
