Intro

Hello, my friend, welcome back to Wise Words Weekly, your weekly shot of wisdom that actually sticks.

This week we’re diving straight into one of the most practical mental models ever created: the Jeff Bezos Regret Minimization Framework.

The quote that started it all: “I asked myself, am I going to regret leaving Wall Street? No. Will I regret missing the beginning of the Internet? Yes. I wanted to minimize the number of regrets I had in my life.” - Jeff Bezos

Bezos didn’t just say it, he lived it. In 1994 he walked away from a cushy hedge-fund job to start an online bookstore in his garage. The rest, as they say, is Amazon history. But the real magic isn’t the billions; it’s the simple question he asked himself that anyone can use today: When I’m 80, which choice will I regret more?

In 1994, Jeff Bezos left a hedge-fund job to start Amazon in his garage. His secret? The "regret minimization framework." 💡

That single mental model for high-stakes decision making has quietly powered countless bold career moves and life pivots ever since. And today, we’re breaking it down so you can start using it immediately. Because life is too short for a pile of “I wish I had…” moments.

This week, we’re diving into the Regret Minimization Framework.

Quote of the Week🔥

I asked myself, am I going to regret leaving Wall Street? No. Will I regret missing the beginning of the Internet? Yes. I wanted to minimize the number of regrets I had in my life. - Jeff Bezos

Reflection 🤔

Picture yourself at 80, rocking on the porch (or wherever your future self hangs out), looking back on the decisions you’re facing right now. Would you rather regret trying something big and falling short, or regret never trying at all? That’s the heart of the Regret Minimization Framework explained. It’s a crystal-clear way to cut through fear and overthinking.

Picture yourself at 80: Will you regret trying and failing, or never trying at all? Embrace the Regret Minimization Framework to conquer fear and live without "what ifs." 📖

When you start applying this lens, something beautiful happens: you naturally lean into a growth mindset. Instead of playing it safe to avoid short-term discomfort, you begin seeing every choice as a chance to grow, learn, and become the person your 80-year-old self will thank you for. It shifts the entire game from “What could go wrong?” to “What story do I want to tell?” And that shift? It’s available to every single one of us, starting… right now!

The year was 2005. We were living in Wichita, Kansas and I had been at my dream job in federal law enforcement for almost three years. One of my best friends had recently moved from Kansas to Colorado. I went out to visit he and his family several times and fell in love with the area. My wife and I had always loved Colorado. Our parents had taken us there on vacation when we were kids and then, when we got married, guess where we honeymooned? Good guess! Colorado! Living there was our destiny.

I petitioned managment for a transfer and practically had that door slammed in my face. A resounding “No!” echoed through the proverbial hallways. A transfer wasn’t going to be an option. I hadn’t heard of the Jeff Bezos RMF concept yet but it was exactly what I implemented. I told my wife that I didn’t want to end up being 80 years old and lamenting about always wanting to live in Colorado. We packed the house, I turned in my resignation and away we went. No job, a rough plan, and not much more.

It all worked out. Today, we live in Colorado and still absolutely love it. Our kids and grandkids all live within minutes of us. And, as I look out the window while I am writing this, I can see the mountains. Life is great!

Oh, by the way, I ended up getting back on with my dream job a couple years later. I went on to complete a very successful career there and retired with a past I’m very proud of and a ton of fantastic memories.

Embrace your inner growth mindset. It’s never too late. Do what you have to do so you won’t live your life with regret.

Why This Can Be Your Superpower 🦸‍♂

Here’s the truth: most people let fear of regret run their show. They stay in jobs they’ve outgrown, delay that side hustle, or talk themselves out of the leap because the “what if it fails?” voice is louder than the “what if it works?” voice. The Regret Minimization Framework flips that script and becomes your personal superpower.

Stop letting fear dictate your future. Discover how the Regret Minimization Framework acts as your ultimate superpower for bold decision-making and personal growth. 🏔️

It gives you clarity in the fog of big decisions, courage when everyone else is playing small, and a built-in growth mindset that turns uncertainty into forward momentum. Suddenly leaving a stable job for a startup mindset doesn’t feel reckless, it feels responsible to your future self. You start making choices that compound into a life of pride instead of quiet disappointment. That’s not just smart; it’s liberating. And once you taste it, you’ll wonder how you ever decided anything without it.

(By the way, if you aren’t sure where your growth mindset currently sits, before and after self-assessments are included in the Billionaire Growth Mindset Blueprint. There will be a link at the bottom of this newsletter. Keep reading.)

The Science Behind It 🔬

Psychology backs this up beautifully. Research on anticipated regret shows that when we vividly imagine our future selves looking back, we make more satisfying long-term choices. Even if they feel riskier in the moment. It’s called the Regret Minimization Framework in action, and studies confirm it reduces decision paralysis and boosts follow-through on meaningful goals.

Visualize your future: Using the Regret Minimization Framework helps you overcome decision paralysis and align your daily actions with your long-term goals. 🧠

By projecting forward, you engage episodic future thinking, a proven brain process that helps override short-term fear and align actions with what truly matters. The result? Fewer regrets and more momentum.

Stories That Bring It to Life 🧬

Real people, real pivots, real zero-regret results.

Falguni Nayar was a high-flying investment banker at Kotak Mahindra Bank in India for over 20 years. At age 49 she asked herself the Bezos-style question: would she regret staying in a comfortable corporate role more than betting on her dream of an online beauty platform? She left the stability, founded Nykaa in 2012 with her family, and turned it into India’s leading e-commerce beauty retailer. By 2021 Nykaa went public and made her a billionaire. But, more importantly, she says she has zero regrets because she minimized the one that would have haunted her: never trying.

From investment banker to billionaire: Falguni Nayar's journey founding Nykaa embodies the 'regret minimization framework.' 🚀💄

Closer to home, Josie Natori left a promising Wall Street banking career in the late 1970s because the “safe” path started feeling like the regretful one. She launched a lingerie line from her apartment using Philippine craftsmanship and built the Natori Company into a global fashion brand that’s been thriving for over 40 years. She often talks about how that early decision, guided by the same future-self logic, gave her a career filled with creativity and impact instead of quiet “what ifs.”

Both women proved that when you apply the Regret Minimization Framework, the “leap” becomes the smartest move you ever make.

How To Start Today 🏃‍➡️

You don’t need to quit your job tomorrow, you just need to start using the framework:

  1. Grab a quiet 10 minutes and write down one decision you’ve been wrestling with (career pivot, side hustle, big move, relationship choice).

  2. Project yourself to age 80 and ask: “Which path will I regret more, trying or not trying?” Write both answers honestly.

  3. Choose the option with the least long-term regret. Then, take one tiny step toward it this week (research, one conversation, one prototype).

  4. Revisit the framework monthly. It gets easier and more powerful every time.

Watch how quickly that growth mindset muscle strengthens and how the “safe but sorry” options lose their grip.

There is only one thing that makes a dream impossible to achieve: The fear of failure.
