Two and a half decades ago, my title was Court Services Officer. Over the course of eight years, I held several different roles in the 16th Judicial District Court Services Office. I started out as a Surveillance Officer, supervising those who were on house arrest. I was quickly promoted to Supervisor of the Electronic Monitoring House Arrest Unit and held that position for about three years. Then, I was promoted again to the role of Court Services Officer.

As a CSO, I had two primary duties. The first and most prominent was supervising people the judge had placed on supervised probation or bond. I was a Probation Officer.

The second role was that of Pre-Sentence Investigator. When someone was convicted of a felony, it was my job to conduct an investigation of their previous criminal history and lifestyle and then prepare a report of my findings for the Judge so the person could be properly sentenced in accordance with the statutes that guided that procedure. I absolutely hated writing pre-sentence investigations.

One day, I had the opportunity to be the driver for the Chief District Judge as he traveled to another city in our district. He oversaw all of the judges in a six-county area and he supervised my boss, the Chief Court Services Officer who also reported to him. It was a great opportunity.

During our trip, he asked me how my job was going. I was honest. I loved the probation portion of my job but I absolutely detested conducting pre-sentence investigations. He asked why. I had never really given it any thought but quickly realized it was because I was disorganized and had the wrong mindset. His wisdom helped me understand where my disconnect was. Thanks to him, I was able to turn those obstacles into stepping stones, begin conducting better investigations and actually enjoy the work.

Years later, that experience played an integral role in my new career of conducting fugitive investigations. I had learned to love conducting investigations. And, according to my arrest stats compared to my co-workers’, I wasn’t half-bad at it!
